R Tj-SD Workshop

The R Tj-SD Workshop, consisting of a group of young architects and architecture students from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Tijuana, and led by Mexican architect and urbanist Gustavo Lipkau, was invited by inSite to design the Tijuana infoSite. This was the second time that the project had been commissioned. The urgency of the architectural assignment necessitated the implementation of a speedy technical and construction timeline. By inserting an extremely light and formally simple parasitical structure over the concrete sphere of the Centro Cultural Tijuana (which houses the Omnimax Cinema), the R_Tj-SD Workshop produced an ephemeral architectural intervention that acted as a skin of wood and glass. The concrete sphere known as “la bola” (the ball) is the symbolic cultural landmark of Tijuana. The temporary building with its fretwork floor and ramps was in use from August 26 to November 13, 2005. The infoSite unfolded in a convex manner, following the recess of one of the exterior lateral stairways of the spherical monument.
