John Outterbridge

(USA, 1933)

Proposal

Los Angeles-based artist John Outterbridge chose the site of the Centro Cultural Tijuana. Titled Window with Wall/Ventana con muro the installation consisted of a steel wall that appeared to cut through a large existing glass wall with a view to the garden at the CECUT, inscribed with graffiti in Spanish and English. The steel wall contrasting with the transparency of the glass and the natural landscape beyond symbolized, according to the artist, both a cultural struggle, a search for a new ideology, and an aspiration for hope.
