Felipe Ehrenberg
(Mexico, 1943-2017)
Mexico City artist Felipe Ehrenberg created a two-part installation, Curtain Call, sited in the concourse of the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego and in the garden of the Centro Cultural Tijuana. The artist installed two nearly identical structures. In Tijuana, the work consisted of a metal framework of poles between which cables were stretched. Across these cables, faceless cotton cloth dolls were randomly hung like human musical notes. In San Diego, the installation took a similar form, except that the framework was built of wood and the lines were made of hemp.

For his INSITE97 Community Engagement project, Installation Art/Arte instalación, Felipe Ehrenberg developed a workshop for young Tijuana artists at the Casa de la Cultura in Tijuana. Working with the artists over several months, Ehrenberg introduced installation as an art medium and aided the production of twenty-six installations throughout the city of Tijuana. Sites included Playas de Tijuana, Albergue Temporal Tijuana, DIF, and Centro Comunitario Universidad Iberoamericana Plantel Noroeste (UIA). In a statement, Ehrenberg said that he felt that not only were the installations artwork, so too was the workshop’s process.
