Armando Rascón
(USA, 1956)
A collaboration with various artists, critics, directors, actors, and musicians was an integral part of the project’s development. Each night, the screening of the films was preceded by a variety of performances, live music, and, on one occasion, a ceremony for the “día de muertos,” the day of the dead. The films included in the program dealt with the issue of immigration through comedy, documentary, and Hollywood productions. The audience for FUTURAZTLAN was an unusual combination of specialists interested in immigration, movie aficionados, contemporary art public, and the usual crowd of Cinelandia 2000.
The artist worked collaboratively with cultural critics from the US and Mexico to develop an experimental film festival based on the topic of immigration. FUTURAZTLAN: Film Festival with Immigration Differential, a four-night program, was held at Cinelandia 2000, located in an outdoor market in downtown Tijuana. It included screenings of films, video interviews with Rascón’s collaborators, as well as music and performance interventions.
