Allan Kaprow
(USA, 1927-2006)
As the site for his work, legendary pioneer of Happenings Allan Kaprow chose to use the minaret-like tower at Centro Escolar Agua Caliente (formerly the Casino Agua Caliente), elaborating on associations it evoked— from the prayer towers of mosques to rockets and missiles. The title MUEZZIN refers to the Islamic muezzin who calls worshippers to prayer throughout the day. Rather than a human voice, however, the artist broadcast the sound of barking dogs from the top of the tower every hour. Simultaneously, a dense fog was emitted from the base of the tower simulating the firing of a missile.
