Treasures from the Potato Famine/Encuentro, 1994

Located at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego and the Casa de la Cultura Municipal, Mark Alice Durant’s installations, Treasures from the Potato Famine/Tesoros de las escasez de papas en Irlanda and Encuentro/Encounter, each dealt with the issue of collective and personal history, and public and private self. Although distinct in quality, the two installations formed a dialogue by way of Durant’s photographs that occupied both spaces, as well as a bilingual newspaper produced for the project that viewers were invited to read and take away.
