Paradise Creek Educational Park Project, 1997

David Avalos was invited to collaborate within National City, the local school district, and the National Parks Service to construct the Paradise Creek Educational Park/El Proyecto del parque educativo at Kimball Elementary School. A wetlands area, the park highlights a half-mile length of the creek along which Avalos designed observation stations for students to study nature as a subject for art, poetry, and scientific experimentation. The artist also developed a curriculum and materials around the park’s wildlife and geography. Avalos worked with students to paint a mural in the park, and designed other aspects of the site, including walkways and landscaping.
