Columna serpiente, autosacrificio, 1997

Spring Hurlbut’s work for INSITE97, Columna serpiente, autosacrificio, was installed in the staircases of the Casa de la Cultura in Tijuana. Hurlbut designed cast-plaster Greek columns covered in coiling serpents, and column bases holding pairs of skeletal feet. Referencing symbols of victimization and bloodshed from Mexican and Greek history and mythology, Hurlbut wished to use architecture to examine the development of civilization and territories around the border.
