Sonorous Aperture Radar, 2025–2026
Sonorous Aperture Radar (SAR) is a sound sculpture that functions as a composite radar system focused on the San Andreas Fault. It integrates various scientific sensors and monitoring data sources commonly used in geophysical research. By capturing and interpreting multiple data streams, SAR offers a sonic interpretation of the fault’s dynamic state. The system generates a multilayered composition, translating the different axes of seismic and electromagnetic data into immersive sound.
SAR explores the historical evolution of fault monitoring methodologies, tracing a narrative that begins with early seismographic research and extends through the development of modern electromagnetic tools. It reflects on the progression of these technologies and envisions a future of earthquake prediction shaped by satellite data and machine learning models. Through its exploration of informational, geological, and emotional layers, SAR uses sound to create a sensory relationship with the fracture. The physics of the fault itself becomes both an influence and a trigger for the system, shaping the sonic experience.
