Susan Yamagata

(USA, 1958)

San Diego artist Susan Yamagata’s project, A Silent Shame/Una vergüenza silenciosa, was located at the Centro Cultural de la Raza. The multiroom installation dealt with the artist’s personal experience of growing up a child of Japanese WW II internment-camp parents. The stark black-and-white environment created by the artist included artifacts from the time, such as letters written by her parents, that powerfully conveyed the experiences of being held as prisoners of war and of being treated based on race and cultural origin.
